Our philosophy is simple: We believe in zoos. Their potential as agents for conservation and first-movers in the field of animal welfare is unparalleled. However, we also recognize the modern challenges faced by zoos, in order for them to stay relevant and supported. We believe in care and conservation and institutions that are proactive rather than reactive.
Our design process starts by identifying priorities for animal welfare and ensuring that what we build is ready for the future. We use scientific studies and literature, backed by evidence and the latest research to create optimal results. Nature is the norm for which we strive, creating habitats in which the animals not just live but thrive.
Habitats for zoo animals are living landscapes and ecologies with natural connections between animals, plants and other organisms. Designs that fully incorporate and take advantage of these, will provide both increased welfare and educational potential (as well as boosting native biodiversity).
In an increasingly urbanized world, zoos often become the primary point of contact between humans and wildlife. Our design focus frames the visitor experience around amazing wildlife and environmental experiences, creating catalysts for meaningful educational and conservation impacts.
Zoos are not only agents for conservation but also businesses that require funds to operate. The essence of our designs is value creation, and any development must make sense both fiscally and ethically. We repurpose existing structures and facilities, creating wonderful landscapes, using sightlines, natural materials and plantings.
Not all zoos are fit for mega projects, and in many cases, smaller institutions can make major differences. We work with the client in designing solutions and budgets that are scaled and achievable no matter the size and ambitions of the project and the institution, focusing and prioritizing on the essentials.
