Natural behaviours and close encounters
How best to get the most out of existing zoo buildings and create new attractions? With "Madagaskar", the old Chimpanzee House and outdoor enclosure was converted into themed experience featuring a 600 m2 walkthrough enclosure for ring-tailed lemurs (Lemur catta) and black lemurs (Eulemur macao).
The outdoor area has a special focus on foraging and locomotion, with the lemurs actively engaging with a living environment, passing near and above excited visitors. The house was converted into a 120 m2 complex and lush space proving significantly increasing welfare in the colder months. The nearby aviaries were also converted for several species of birds from Madagaskar as well as Alaotran gentle lemurs (Hapalemur alaotrensis).
