Developing for the present, planning for the future
How do you balance the needs of visitors, animals and staff in a modern zoological facility, while also considering environmental impacts, sustainability and biodiversity? "Masterplan 2040" is one proposal on how to solve these challenges, outlying the physical development of Odense ZOO for the next few decades. New animal exhibits, visitor amenities and staff facilities have been planned and designed in careful consideration of the existing qualities of the site.
Visitors will go on an immersive and educational journey through exotic landscapes simulating a wide array of different biomes and habitats. From the mountains of China, to the tropical plains of northern India, across the African savannah to the rocky coastline of Pacific North America, experiencing a diverse world of animals, plants and ecologies. Furthermore, increased focus has been placed on native wildlife and local environments.
"Masterplan 2040" was done as a master thesis project within the University of Copenhagen, together with Ida Flora Linnebjerg and Signe Raunkiær Sihvonen in collaboration with management and staff at Odense ZOO.
"At Odense ZOO, we have worked with Kåre in connection with his master's thesis in landscape architecture In collaboration with fellow students, Kåre developed a complete masterplan proposal for Odense ZOO. In the process, Kåre demonstrated great professionalism and extensive knowledge of animals and zoological facilities. Kåre's unique knowledge gives him a special opportunity to incorporate solutions from zoos around the world. "
